In our society of chronic stress, Max has his share. Dogs can suffer from separation anxiety, thunderstorm phobia, post-surgery stress, show jitters, temperament problems, and even fret about their owner's stress. These are only a few reasons to consider massage for your pooch. Other reasons include added socialization for your pet and enhancement of the human/animal bond. Dogs feeling stress in a new environment, working dogs with sore muscles, or older pets with chronic aches can benefit from massage as well.
The body operates through balance, and each muscle affects other muscles and bones they are connected to. Massage seems to work by increasing blood circulation which removes metabolic waste products, decreases swelling, improves flexibility, and accelerates healing. When massage techniques are properly applied they can help keep the body toned and in balance.
Massage techniques vary according to the system they are to affect. Stretching benefits muscles and range of motion in joints. Petrissage, which involves kneading and pulling, aids the skin and muscles. The light touch and stroking of effleurage aids the nervous system, and stroking improves circulation. Tapotement involves quick, stimulating strokes and, for obvious reasons, is not appropriate on all dogs. Technique applications vary. They may move in circular patterns, or across the muscle, up and down the muscle, or to and away from the heart.
These techniques require knowledge of dog anatomy and can be dangerous if not applied properly. They should be employed only by a trained and certified dog massage practitioner. Occasionally there are cases where massage therapy would not be appropriate. They include, but are not limited to, dogs suffering from fever, shock, infection, fractures, lumps, open wounds or rashes.
Tellington T Touch, developed by Linda Tellington-Jones is a popular touch therapy that differs from typical massage in that it uses softer techniques and does not require knowledge of anatomy. Although special training is required to reap maximum benefits, there are simple techniques that you can do at home for your dog. See Home Massage for Dogs for information on how you can pamper your pooch and reap your own rewards of well being at the same time.
