Animal Fair Donates Toys to Homeless DogsCelebrity Dog Lovers Film a PSA & Give Toys to Homeless Pooches
High profile dog lovers celebrated the holidays by participating in Toys for Dogs. Whoopi Goldberg, Barbara Walters, and other celebrities donated toys to homeless dogs.
Holidays aren't just for humans! Animal Fair Magazine gathered together a stellar list of celebrity dog lovers on December 13th in New York City at their 3rd Annual Toys for Dogs Party. Attendees donated toys to homeless pooches and also filmed "We are Dogs United"; a public service announcement scheduled to air in early 2009 that will raise awareness of animal rescue and adoption. Celebrities Show Support for Dogs in NeedCelebrities including Abigail Breslin, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Belzer, and Jill Zarin all participated in this party for a cause. Cheery canine guests were also in attendance at Toys for Dogs and were able to pose for photos with Santa Claus and bark their holiday wishes. A lifestyle magazine for animal lovers and pet owners, Animal Fair Magazine launched Toys for Dogs by placing donation boxes in various shelters. Although Animal Fair supports animal adoption throughout the year, a special effort is made to encourage people to support animals in need during the holiday season. Donation boxes have been placed at shelters throughout New York City, including Animal Care and Control and the Humane Society of New York. Toys for Dogs encourages families to visit the shelters, donate a dog toy, and look at the adorable animals available for adoption! Economic Recession Affects AnimalsAccording to Wendy Diamond, Founder & Editorial Director of Animal Fair Magazine, "The economy is not just affecting people but unsuspecting innocent animals as well. Tons of people have surrendered their pets because they can no longer provide for them. Whether a dog was naughty or nice this year, every underdog deserves a home, love, care and toys!” USA Today reported on July 9, 2008 that local animal shelters are witnessing a dramatic increase in animals abandoned by owners who have lost their homes to foreclosures. Also, on December 16, 2008 the Boston Globe reported that the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals witnessed a 45 percent increase in pets surrendered to its Boston shelter for economic or housing-related reasons. Similar stories can be heard at shelters across the country. Joined by her famous pooch Lucky at Toys for Dogs, Diamond stated that "this event is always fun for both dogs and humans. Who doesn't love Santa? I do! Even my half Jewish Maltese does, so why can't we all just celebrate during the holidays, and remember what giving and adopting is all about?"
