Dog Crates, Kennels, and Carriers

Comfortable Confinement for Dogs in Travel or Training

Jul 8, 2009 Joy Butler

A variety of dog crates, kennels, and portable carriers, available in plastic, wire and nylon, are designed for transportation or housetraining.

Dogs need a safe and comfortable place for training, traveling, and resting. While prolonged crating may cause stress which leads to health issues or behavioral problems, most dogs actually enjoy having a den where they can retreat at times. Doggy kennels come in various types and designs including plastic dog crates, wire dog crates, and soft portable dog carriers to serve different purposes.

Plastic Dog Crates

Plastic crates, sometimes called kennels, are light weight, easy to transport, and can be taken apart for easy cleaning or storage. They provide an enclosed and safe den for dogs. Plastic crates come in various colors and designs and usually have a wire door on the front with holes or wire windows on the sides for ventilation. Some plastic dog crates even have a door on top for lifting the dog out. A variety of latching devices are available for security and ease of opening. Some have handles for carrying or can be pulled on rollers. A soft bed can be added for the dog’s comfort.

When choosing a plastic crate, dog owners should look for something that the dog can stand up in, turn around in, and lie down in comfortably when full grown. For growing puppies in crate training, partitions reduce crate size temporarily and can be removed later. Prices vary, and higher priced crates are generally sturdier. Doors have been known to pull loose on crates being carried by the handle. Wire windows may be more secure for dogs who tend to chew. Crates to be used in travel must meet company specifications.

Wire Dog Crates

Wire crates are wire cages usually with a plastic or metal floor tray that slides in and out for easy cleaning. Pads or bedding can be used for cushions. Although covers are available, wire crates are not enclosed but allow the dog maximum ventilation and visibility. Most wire crates are collapsible, without tools, for storage or transport.

A wire crate should be large enough that the full grown dog can stand up, turn around, and lie down in it comfortably. Partitions can be used for growing puppies in housetraining. Prices vary with heavier gauge wiring and various coatings. Dog owners should take caution when removing a dog from a wire crate as doggy toes can get caught in the wire slats around the door.

Soft Portable Dog Carriers

Portable carriers for small dogs may resemble a zippered gym bag, duffel bag, large purse or even luggage on wheels or a backpack. They are usually made of nylon or canvas with screened ventilation and come in a variety of cute styles and designs. Pampered toy breeds often ride with their head peeking out the top or end.

When choosing one of these soft carriers, dog owners should look for sturdiness and good ventilation. Caution should be taken in warm weather as dogs can quickly become overheated in this type of carrier. The dog should be able to get plenty of air and be able to move around a bit. Following certain specifications, soft carriers are approved for use with some airlines.

There is a new product called the ToeJam Crate Guard on the market now that prevents toes and paws from getting caught in wire crate as they go in or out of their crate.
