Doggy Halloween CostumesHomemade or Commercial, Unique Characters Add Holiday Fun and Fright
Whether for party, costume contest, or trick or treating, dressing up dogs on Halloween can be fun, as long as safety and comfort is priority.
A little creativity goes a long way in dressing up dogs for Halloween. Sometimes doggy looks and personality just lend themselves to certain characters and add the polishing touch to a cute costume. Weiner dogs always make cute ‘hot dogs’ sandwiched between two ‘bun pillows’ with a piece of yellow yarn glued along the back for a touch of mustard. Of course any low-slung, long-bodied dog like the Dachshund would look cute wearing a body suit of legs like a centipede. Just imagine how much the face of a pit bull can look like a lion when framed in a big bushy mane. Talk about Halloween fright! A lion walking down the street on a leash might evoke a scream from the bravest person but when that lion starts barking, now that’s downright spooky! What about a little black, pointed-nosed Schipperke sporting a bushy tail attached with an elastic waistband and a few white stripes strategically sprayed on? This might elicit a few screams from fleeing friends too. The cute bug eyed, flat face of a tan Pug just naturally lends itself to the character of a crab or insect. All the dog owner has to add is an orange vest of legs and pincers or a striped bumblebee shirt for the full effect. What about a black Pug or a Boston terrier? A scary spider of course! The Pug face can also look adorable dressed in an infant cap, complete with diaper shirt and a pacifier attached to the collar. The soft curly poodle-do is always beautiful. A shiny blouse, hair ribbon and a poodle skirt can turn any poodle girl into an adorable ‘50’s Bobby Soxer. Then there are the Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. A scruffy pooch donning orange or yellow yarn hair along with a patchwork vest or skirt completes this effect. A softer look in the clothing can create a Cabbage Patch doll look. A unique costume for twin small dogs is the “Two Peas in a Pod” look consisting of a double vest made of quilted green material. Or the single green padded vest will turn a sweet dog into “Sweet Pea.” A walking picnic table is a unique idea with a simple costume. A bigger dog wearing a checkered tablecloth as a cape with plastic breads and fruits pinned on might draw some weird responses. A purple satin camel blanket with a fake hump sewn on can transform a fawn colored Great Dane into a desert dromedary. Bulldogs and German Shepherds look brave in blue policeman costumes complete with badge and handcuffs attached. A little imagination can turn a Doberman into Dracula, a Cairn terrier into a pumpkin, or a Beagle into a cowboy. Add some sparkle and glitter and an American Eskimo becomes a beauty queen or Cinderella. Whether the dog owner chooses a commercial costume or a homemade costume, the dog’s comfort and safety should always take priority An Internet search yields cute photos of some the ideas above as well as other costume ideas for the pooch willing to put up with human idiosyncrasies.
