Dogs Are Bloggers Too

Meet Max the Golden Retriever, a Blogger With an Attitude

Feb 10, 2009 Mayra Calvani

Who says bloggers have to be human? Nowadays fictional characters and even pets are conquering the world of the blogosphere.

Meet one very special blogger, Max the Golden Retriever. Max works hard at the computer to write about his many adventures, design his monthly newsletter, Keep On Wagging, keep dog lovers informed of special events and shows, and maintain his award-winning blog in top form. He also has his own gift shop with a fun array of products for dog lovers. Sure, Max is a cute golden retriever--and, after all, who can resist one? But what makes Max stand out is his witty personality and humorous outlook on life.

The Interview: Meet Max

Max was gracious enough to answer a few questions for Suite101.

Suite101: How did Max the Golden Retriever get started?

Max: Well, it all started when my Dad, Lord Jazz, and my Mom, Spirit, met at a farm in Raleigh, NC. They knew at first sniff that it was true love… so after a very short engagement period they… Oh, you mean how did my blog start? Sorry… The blog was the idea of my adopted (long story) person. He really enjoys our little ‘adventures’ together (who wouldn’t enjoy time with a Golden?) and thought that it would be fun to help me share my side of some of those adventures through a blog.

Suite101: Why do you think people like hearing stories from a doggy's point of view?

Max: Anyone who has spent time with a dog can tell that we all have stories to tell. Each head bob, bark and tail wag is our way to trying to let you know what we’re thinking. I think that people see a little bit of their own dogs in my adventures and maybe even come away with a better understanding of what their pets are saying. I also think that some cats like to hear my stories because they’re secretly plotting to overtake dogs as man’s best friend and are looking for insight.

Suite101: In what radio or TV shows have you been featured?

Max: No TV shows (have you heard of any offers?) but I was interviewed on an ABC radio talk show in Perth, Australia. Well, technically my person was interviewed… something about Australians not being able to understand my strong Southern US canine accent. Anyway, my blog has been featured on websites like CNN.com and the Canwest News Service that feeds news sites all over Canada. I was even immortalized in a work of art that was displayed in Manchester, England.

Suite101: What do you mostly blog about or what topics do you like to cover?

Max: Most of my blog posts, at least the good ones, are about my adventures as a dog. I’ve blogged about my adventures to the dog park, the vet, the kennel, the beach, the… well, I’m sure you get the idea. Along the way I get to tell about my experiences and about the new and old friends I share these adventures with like my buddies Tia, Molly and Chiquillo.

Suite101: What is your mission?

Max: You may remember that my main mission last fall was to infiltrate the evil cat lair in my neighborhood. I even went to the extreme of dressing up as a cat on Halloween. Unfortunately, most of the cats’ evil plans still are a mystery to me. Most recently, I’ve focused my attention on an effort to catch one of the squirrels that lives in the trees in my yard. I’ve chased them, and even resorted to writing a poem for them on Squirrel Appreciation day… I’m still working on a plan on how to climb a tree… if you have any tips let me know. You may have also heard that I’ve also inspired a whole line of cool “stuff” for dog lovers like t-shirts and stickers that feature designs of me and my adventures. You can see my stuff at Keep on Wagging.

Suite101: Do you consider ads on your site?

Max: I primarily allow my friends to have links on my site, but I do consider requests for paid advertising. The cost depends on the type of ad or link requested and can range from 2 or 3 dog treats to a new cool squeaky toy.

Thanks for your time, Max!
