Candace, our first Featured Fido, is a special tiny white poodle cross who resembles a teddy bear and a lamb all rolled into one little animal.

Candace is a tiny white poodle cross who resembles a teddy bear and a lamb all rolled into one little animal. Candace is our first Featured Fido and lives in a South Texas shelter as a permanent resident because she was homeless at the pound and found to have special health problems. She’s approximately six years old and has been a shelter dog for almost a year. Although her fluffy coat camouflages the disfigurement, Candace is missing an ear. There are no clues as to how this might have happened but, no doubt, she would have a story to tell, if only she could talk. A severe heart murmur and a collapsing trachea cause her to live on daily medications. Candace doesn’t mind her meds. In fact, she loves them because they come in a meatball. Candace has a bit of a weight problem and must go lightly on the treats. Sometimes she gets hooves to chew on, as a no-calorie way to satisfy her treat cravings.

She coughs frequently, especially after exercise, but Candace loves life and people. She will look you straight in the eyes, with a doggy smile, and stomp her little front feet. In the mornings, her eyes sparkle as she bounces on short legs to the door with all the other little dogs. During rainy weather, her curly, white coat collects mud but frequent baths brighten and fluff her fur. At some point in her life, someone cared enough to spend time teaching her basic commands such as Sit, Down, and Roll Over. She promptly does these when told, and always looks for her treat afterward. With encouragement, she will even do little backward hops to music. This admirable little dog’s enthusiasm is envied by all who know her.

Her life in the shelter is complete. All her needs are met, she sees a veterinarian regularly, scampers in the yard with doggy friends, and plays with the shelter workers daily. At night she goes to bed cuddled in a soft blanket in her crate with a hoof to chew on. She even manages to keep her crate dry except for when she’s on diuretics. Candace is a joy to all who know her. This little dog’s days may be shortened due to her health issues but Candace is a happy girl who seems to accept, with zest, whatever life hands her. That’s what matters most..
