The average canine requires a diet consisting of 40 percent meats (protein), 30 percent vegetables, and 30 percent starches.

It is easy for any one to make his or her dogs’ fresh food to nourish their bodies and maintain their health. However, before changing any animal’s diet it is essential to consult a veterinary professional. A sudden change in diet could lead to a variety of health issues.

Knowing the proportions of meat, vegetables, and starch that your dog’s body requires automatically opens the door for numerous creative recipes. However, before one begins to create and execute multidimensional recipes, it is advisable to determine which ingredients the dog prefers.

Simply provide your dog with a sample of each ingredient to determine if it is palatable to your furry friend. If a dog immediately rejects a raw food item, you may provide a cooked sample which will guarantee whether or not your dog will eat it.

It is absolutely imperative that a dog doesn’t eat chocolate. Even in trace amounts, chocolate is a known killer of dogs. Also, seafood, especially salmon, should be avoided. A dog should only consume seafood if it has been incorporated into its diet as a puppy or young adult. A small amount of seafood is acceptable; however, by and large seafood should be avoided at all costs.

Other foods to avoid:

  • Raw meat (the bacteria can kill your beloved pet)
  • Garlic
  • Grapes
  • Artificial fats and sweeteners
  • Candy
  • Fruit juices (there are numerous preservatives and artificial ingredients)

Recommended Proteins:

  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Beef
  • Soy Beans
  • Eggs (cooked)
  • Organ meats such as Liver and Kidney (use in moderation)

Recommended Starches:

  • Brown rice
  • Oatmeal
  • Multi-grain bread crumbs
  • White rice
  • Potatoes

Recommended Vegetables:

  • Broccoli (a favorite for many dogs)
  • String beans (in the can preferably, high in vitamins and minerals)
  • Chopped Carrot
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Mushrooms
  • Peas
  • Spinach
  • Celery (best if peeled before serving)
  • Beans
  • Cabbage
  • Asparagus
  • Creamed corn

The following is a quick and easy recipe idea designed to be created in less than fifteen minutes. The proportions are correct for a ten pound dog which makes it easy to manipulate depending upon the dog’s weight. It should be noted that homemade dog food can be frozen and thawed in an identical manner as human food; however it must not be refrigerated for more than three days.

Quick and Easy Chow

Ingredients:

1 1/4 cups shredded cooked chicken

1/3 cup quartered soy beans

1/4 cup carrot (finely chopped)

1/4 cup green bean (chopped into bite size pieces)

1/3 cup broccoli (finely chopped)

1/2 cup cooked brown rice

2 cups chicken or vegetable broth

1 pinch of salt, black pepper and rosemary (optional)

Execution:

In a medium saucepan combine chicken broth, rosemary, chopped carrots, green beans, and broccoli over high heat. Bring the contents of the pan to a boil, stirring occasionally. When a rolling boil is achieved turn the heat to low, add the quartered soy beans and cover the pot. Allow the mixture to simmer for three minutes without stirring before uncovering and adding the remaining ingredients. Once all of the ingredients are in the pot, maintain low heat and stir until all of the ingredients are completely integrated and warmed.
