Liver from big game can be used to make healthy and affordable dog treats. This recipe shows an easy way to make over a pound of homemade organic liver dog biscuits.

Many hunters don't save the liver from their elk or venison because they don't like to eat liver themselves. The liver from a healthy deer or elk is a very valuable source of organic nutrients that shouldn't go to waste. Liver is a great source of vitamin B12 and vitamin A and can be an excellent supplement for dogs. Hunters and their canine friends will appreciate this easy recipe that calls for deer or elk livers and makes over a pound of healthy, homemade dog biscuits.

Ingredients for Liver Dog Treats

Use all organic ingredients to make all organic dog treats.

  • 1 lb of elk or venison liver
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup corn meal
  • 12-14 cloves of garlic
  • 2 eggs

Steps to Make Homemade Liver Dog Biscuits

  1. Preheat oven at 350 degrees
  2. Grease the bottom of an 11" x 13" baking pan
  3. Puree the liver and peeled garlic in food processor until smooth
  4. Add eggs, flour and corn meal
  5. Continue to puree until the mixture is smooth and uniform in color
  6. Spread mixture evenly onto the prepared cookie sheet
  7. Smooth over the batter with a soft spatula until the batter is a uniform thickness on the sheet

Storage of the Homemade Dog Treats

The homemade dog treats will stay moist and chewy if sealed in an airtight container and are stored in either the refrigerator or the freezer. Treats stored in the refrigerator should be used within 14 days. Another option is to turn the homemade treats into dry biscuits. Dehydrating the dog biscuits removes moisture from the product and increases shelf life of the treats. Biscuits can be dried in an electric food dehydrator, spread out in pans and left to air dry or the biscuits can be dried in an oven on the lowest setting. Drying time will vary depending on the size of the dog biscuits.

Liver Treats Should be Fed to Dogs in Moderate Amounts

Liver is very healthy and beneficial to dogs, but it should only be used as a diet supplement. Liver is a very concentrated source of vitamin A and too much vitamin A can cause toxicity in dogs. The treats should be cut into small squares only be fed to dogs two to three times a week.

Liver dog treats are easy to make and are healthy for dogs when used as an occasional treat. Homemade dog treats are a sensible way for hunters to put the liver from their big game to use. This recipe is a smart way to save money on organic treats for dogs.
