You don't want to leave your dog's appearance in just anyone's care, so learn how to choose a really good dog groomer.

There are many things to consider before trusting your dog to a complete stranger. Grooming can be a stressful time for any pooch, and finding the right groomer can be a big help with the process. If your dog has a good experience, you will be much more likely to get him back for a second visit.

Get Some Recommendations

The best way to find a groomer is by asking around. You might start with family and friends, or even ask your vet. Try to ask people who have a dog similar to yours. In fact, some veterinarian offices have groomers available. Some may only be available on certain days, but in most cases if they are trusted by your vet, you can feel much better.

If you do not know anyone who can give you a recommendation, you might check online for local forums that provide reviews of groomers. You can also check with dog groomer associations to find this service in your area. If a groomer has gone out of his way to become part of an association, you have a better chance that he is reputable.

Check Dog Groomer Credentials

When searching for the best groomer, you should always check credentials. Some states require a groomer to have special training and certification. Even if this is not the case, every area requires some type of business license. While a license has no effect on the groomer's abilities, it will tell you if he has a reputable business.

You can also check with the Better Business Bureau to see if they have received complaints or have been found to be a bad company. You will want to find out how long the company (or individual) has been in business. Finding the perfect groomer and having to look for a new one in just a few months can be very frustrating.

Finding a Groomer with Proper Experience

You will want to consider if the groomer you use has experience with your breed of dog. If he has only worked with long haired, large dogs and you have a small, short hair breed, that might not be the best fit.

You should also ask for technique and styling option references. If you are entering your dog in shows or pageants, you will want to ensure the groomer you use can provide the best styles. Some styles are very complex and will require a great deal of expertise. You might ask if the groomer has a portfolio, including pictures of previous work done.

Safety is a Definite Consideration

Safety is another area to check out. You will want to know if the groomer uses restraint devices and what types of chemicals are used in the grooming process. No groomer should use restraints unless they are absolutely necessary. Most dogs will feel even more stressed and put up a bigger fight if these techniques are used.

Some chemicals can leave a lasting residue that can cause irritation. There are many flea and tick pesticides that should not be used on dogs as well. You will also want to ensure that the groomer uses the correct doses of the treatments according to your animals size. Using too much flea medication on a small dog can cause illness.

Check Groomer Availability

You should always ask about the groomer’s scheduling availability. Some groomers will have a walk-in service and others require appointments well in advance. If you are in need of a groomer fast because your dog has gotten into a mess, it would be nice to have the option available for quick service. Some individual groomers offer a traveling service as well. He will come to your home and provide all of the services on the spot. These groomers often charge more though. You will want to figure out what is best for your lifestyle.

There is no sure-fire way to find a great groomer. You will just need to do your research and then trust your instincts. Overall, recommendations seem the best way to go before making a final decision for your dog.
