Whether raising dogs or cats is a hobby, a business, or an accident, there are numerous ways you can find new homes for them. Try these ideas for selling your animals.

Cute puppies and cuddly kittens bring joy into many homes. Soon, however, new homes will have to be found. Planning and early action is the key to finding new owners for pets. Here are some points to help make your dog or cat sales go swiftly and profitably.

Timing

An eight week old puppy sells much better than a three month old. Many folks want to purchase a puppy as soon as it is weaned in order to build stronger ties with it. Young animals are also in the prime successful training years. How does one guarantee quick sales at an early age? Start advertising much earlier. Before the whelping takes place, you can prepare your ads. As soon as the puppies or kittens arrive, place your ads. (More on advertisement locations below.)

Advertisement Locations

Many people generate little response to ads placed in their local papers. Although that is a decent starting place, a more aggressive route can yield better results. Think like a pet-buyer, not a pet-seller. If you were looking for a new puppy or kitten, where would you look?

One often overlooked route is a pet store. They are usually zealous buyers, as they are always looking for animals for their customers. They usually require a discounted price, but almost always buy in bulk, so it’s a great time-saving advantage for breeders. Another advantage is that pet store owners are commonly repeat buyers. It’s quite possible that the pet store market alone could relieve you of your animals in one shot.

Local email loops and message boards are another way to get the attention of folks who might be seeking a new pet. A great way to start spreading the word is to email a “Birth Announcement” to everyone in your address book, explaining the details and offering those interested to come meet the new little ones. They, or someone they might know, could be actively on the hunt, just waiting for the perfect pet.

Printed flyers placed in prime locations can generate a lot of interest. Pet stores, feed stores, vets offices, grocery stores, libraries, etc. are good starting places.

Good Caretaking

Proactive breeders produce happy, healthy pets. Potential new pet owners are, quite naturally, seeking well-cared for, groomed, loved animals. Proper shots, worming, and cleanliness are absolutely essential to healthy pets. If your animals are to be registered with a national agency like AKC, file the proper paperwork as early as possible. That way, the new owners can be presented with proper papers without any delay. Generous doses of love, proper nutrition, and exercise, and even basic early training can also help ensure that the pets will shine.

For every new puppy and kitten, there is a loving home awaiting them. With preparation, excellent care, and imaginative advertising, they will find the house of their dreams and can make any breeder a successful one.
