Heartwarming Tales on the Web of a Heroic Dog and Lucky Puppy

Dec 10, 2008 Gill Hart

Within the last weeks of 2008, 2 dramatic dog stories related to cars have hit the headlines and become internet sensations; touching the hearts of dog lovers everywhere.

A stray dog in Santiago has become the latest internet sensation, touching the hearts of thousands of YouTube viewers.

The video, initially posted onYouTube shows how, on December 4th, 2008, a dog, thought to be a stray, risks his life on a Santiago highway to pull his injured doggie friend away from the path of speeding cars and trucks.

Heroic Dog Pulls Injured Canine Friend Out of Danger

The incident was captured on film by the Vespucio Norte Highway surveillance cameras, which first shows the stray dicing with death by dogging cars and trucks, trying to reach an injured canine laying motionless in the middle of the road. The rescue-dog then uses his teeth to pull the injured pooch to safety, whilst cars and trucks continue to whiz by. None of the drivers of any of the vehicles stopped to help. The 47-second video clip ends by showing motorway servicemen arriving at the scene.

Sadly, according to the Belfast Telegraph of December 9th, 2008 “Amazing video: homeless dog risks life to rescue pal”, the injured dog died from his wounds, and the rescue dog, who miraculously survived without being hit by a car, ran off. Attempts have since been made to find the heroic pooch, as a Chilean TV station has been bombarded with calls from people wanting to adopt the dog. After the TV station screened the video clip it received a stream of calls wanting to offer a home to the stray.

The Daily Mail's " Hero dog becomes YouTube star for braving speeding traffic as he tried to save injured pal.” of December 9th, 2008, quotes a Chilean TV announcer as pointing out, "these images seen from the surveillance cameras show a very common situation with our overpopulated highways."

The episode has also struck a cord on internet blogs and was picked up by a number of worldwide news stations including ABC 7 News' Denver Channel. One Huffington Post blogger, who calls himself Santiago Citizen, (in response to the same story run on the Huffington Post, December 3rd 2008, Dog Saves Other Injured Dog Lying On Highway)) says that the principal problem is that the City of Santiago has grown up in recent years so quickly that the development of highways and industries have put the city's stray animals at greater risk.

Lucky Puppy Survives After Being Hit at 70 mph

Another amazing news story on the web had a happier ending. On November 17th, 2008 a puppy that was hit at high speed by an Italian driver in Cozze, Southern Italy was hit so hard that he actually became embedded inside the car’s grille — and survived.

Suffering only a broken leg and bruising the lucky 1-year-old pup heroically clung on for dear life for 15 miles until the driver, Marco Menozzi stopped, laying trapped in the grille under the body of the Peugeot 207 car.

According to a police spokesman in the Sky News article of November 18, 2008 "Miracle Pup Survives Hit-and-Run," if the pooch had been hit with less force “he would have bounced off the car and been crushed under the wheels." The dog was taken to police kennels to be cared for and to try and find him a new home.
