Redmond's Marymoor Park flaunts its off leash dog park in the face of ever more tightening suburbia. It's a doggie mixer and every pooch can bring his "owner" along.

"Doggy Disneyland", as it is locally dubbed, Marymoor Park is best known for its 40 acres of off leash dog park. This is where dogs can be dogs. Black Labs dogpaddle against Golden Retrievers to see who can get the prize: an old tennis ball thrown by an owner into the Sammamish River.

This fabulous former farm is less than two miles from the main Microsoft campus. It is a great place to meet old friends, new friends, possible dates, and new dogs. Doggie parents come from Seattle, and all over the county, to give their pups some good old-fashioned exercise.

Dog Playgroups: Seattle Puggles Playtime, Iggy Ambassadors of Emerald City (I.G. stands for Italian Greyhounds), and Seattle Beagle-Lovers-Unite are doggie playgroups that have recently had meet-ups in Marymoor Dog Park.

Learn how to teach a dog his name. Many dogs don't come when called.

However, Marymoor Park is open to anyone and any mutt, though smaller toy dogs might be overwhelmed. Also, the off-leash area is not fenced in, but dogs are so happy to be around their own tribe that they don’t seem to wander far. Dogs commonly stay where other pups have marked the bushes and trees. The most important points about this off leash dog park are:

  • Unfenced
  • Mostly medium to large dogs (See this video of cute dogs at the dog park.)
  • Close to Microsoft, Kirkland, Bellevue, Redmond
  • Slow-moving river for dogs (fenced off during salmon spawning around August - December)
  • Bring several tennis balls and a one-dollar bill for parking
  • Can get crowded when sunny, but dogs don’t care if it’s raining
  • Good place to meet people

Marymoor Park, More Than Just a Dog Park

The park in its entirety is 640 acres. The Sammamish River (Sammamish Slough - or Slew - as it is called by locals) runs through it. The current is not usually swift enough to be a concern for dog owners. However, the other 600 acres of park have separate areas for:

  • Pea patches
  • Model airplane flying
  • Sports fields
  • Bicycle velodrome
  • Rock-climbing wall

S.O.D.A. (Save Our Dog Area) and Marymoor Park

The Save Our Dog Area committee was formed in 1987 when the King County Parks Department tried to close the off leash dog park at Marymoor. S.O.D.A. is a volunteer group and a non-profit 501c3 approved organization. Volunteers are welcomed at any “Marymoor Dog Work Party”, to help maintain the trails and the river bank.

Cheap Fun in King County

With the abundance of parks, mountains, rivers and lakes, the Eastside (area east of Seattle) has many inexpensive ways to get out and have fun. Marymoor dog park is absolutely amazing and it only costs one dollar. People who don’t have a dog should borrow one. (Someone has commented that the Marymoor Dog Park is enclosed by fence, so this is a happy update.)

The offleash park at Marymoor is fenced in. It's just so big that it seems like it's not. The entire thing has a fence around it.

Too many dog walkers with eight plus dogs to one human. Real smart!
