Cuddly and affectionate, many dog owners prefer to have a lapdog and certain breeds are better suited for the task.
Lapdogs are adoring canines who would gladly spend the entire day in their owners lap if they could. Although some larger dogs would fancy themselves to be lapdogs, (and try their hardest to be,) the following are certain breeds of dogs who are known to be lapdogs and can actually fit on an owners lap. Lapdog Italian GreyhoundThe Italian Greyhound was bred specifically to be a companion dog. With its roots in ancient times, the Italian Greyhound was a popular European dog that arrived in the United States at the end of the 1800s. This sweet and docile dog does well with children and other pets, making it a great family dog. It absolutely loves attention and affection. The Lovable Whippet DogThe Whippet is a member of the Greyhound family and the most popular of sighthounds. This sensitive, moderate sized dog is extremely sweet and gentle and is excellent with kids. Not only is it a lapdog, be prepared for this devoted and obedient dog to curl up under the covers in bed at night. The Whippet is a quiet dog who gets along well with other dogs. Kid Friendly PugsThe Pug is a friendly, lively dog that not only is playful, but, has a comedic side to it as well. This charming dog was bred for companionship in China. Sturdy and confident, the Pug is more than happy to do what it can to please its owner. It is great with kids, though, caution needs to be taken that children are not too rough with a Pug. It also makes a good watchdog. Cavalier King Charles SpanielConsidered an ideal house pet, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is extremely outgoing and friendly. Originally used as a foot and lap warmer, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a very happy breed of dog who loves just about everyone. This quiet and gentle breed of dog can do just as well as a city dog as it can a country dog, but, should not live outdoors. Lovable Lhasa Apso DogThe Lhasa Apso is an independent, companion dog that also doubles as a watchdog. This small dog loves to make itself at home and can often be found laying on the furniture. Originally a guard dog in Tibet, the Lhasa Apso is serious, smart, and obedient, if trained properly. Chinese Crested LapdogThe Chinese Crested dog originated in China as a lapdog. It is alert and charming and highly devoted to its family. Eager to please, the Chinese crested dog gets along well with children and other dogs, although, some can be annoying to cats if not taught otherwise. For the hairless Cresteds, care needs to be taken to protect their skin when outdoors. The Playful Dachshund DogThe Dachshund, (also known as a Doxie,) was bred to be a German hunting dog. It is energetic and curious and demands attention. The Dachshund loves to be a part of everything in its owner's life. This affectionate dog can do well in a home with older children who are calm, but, generally is not suited for young children. Chihuahua - The Smallest Breed of DogThe Chihuahua originated in Mexico where the Aztecs considered it to be sacred. This highly devoted dog ranges in weight from 1 - 6 pounds. Despite its small size, the Chihuahua considers itself to be a worthy watch dog. Considered one of the most popular dog breeds in America, the Chihuahua is quite faithful and fearless. In addition to the dogs listed above, there are many other breeds of dogs that make great lapdogs including the Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Bichon Frise, Maltese, and Miniature Schnauzer. Not to forget, there are many lovable and affectionate mixed breeds of dogs that also make excellent lapdogs.
