- Shedding
Mastiffs do tend to shed a lot. I've found that many short-haired breeds seem to shed more than long-haired breeds. A daily brushing may be a solution for you. If your dog is shedding to the point of having bare spots or a thin coat, it may be a good idea to ask your vet about it.

In response to Shedding posted by tvharris:I'd also look to what is being fed. My mastiff used to shed quite a bit but with a change in diet to a natural diet (I'm a raw feeder) and some good whole food nutritionals he hardly sheds at all. Typically a dog should blow his/her coat twice a year -once in the spring and once in the fall - and then some regular minimal shedding year round. However excessive shedding is something you can address through a diet change and that often means getting out of the bag and into what is natural for a dog (ie raw meat and bones). You can even add some good fish oil, probiotics and enzymes to a premiun dog food if you aren't ready for the raw diet. Just make sure the food you feed has as little grains, and soy in it as possible, with no byproducts or synthetic preservatives.
Also as Joy stated, a good regular brushing is very helpful. I only have to brush mine once a week with a shedding blade and a soft brush, but you may need to do daily until the coat grows healthier plus your dog will enjoy the time with you.
