» maile29 - What kind of dog do I have?
My family recently adopted a dog from a local shelter. He is presumed to be about 8-9 months old and in good health. He is solid black with brownish eyes and weighs about 70 pounds. He is very friendly and gets along well with my other dog and my cat. The people at the local shelter told us they thought he was part lab and part Newfoundland, but we are not sure. He has long fur that does not shed and a very full tail. Could someone please help me identify what he might be and perhaps estimate how large he might become.-- posted by maile29

Thank you for visiting my Dogs topic. The people at your local shelter probably have a lot of experience with dogs and their guess seems consistent with your description. If you would like to email me a standing side view picture and a frontal face shot, I will give you my best guess. My email is dogs@suite101.com

How many dogs do you have? There are many companies out there doing test for pedigree but so far none for mixed breed. However, good news in on the way, I heard from my vet that there is a company out there that has the science to trace the parentage of mixed breed canine.
If you are interested, send me a copy of your dog's photo and your email address so that I can keep you posted where to do the test.

You're talking about DNA testing, however, I have no information on cost. Actually the AKC now requires DNA testing for registration if they have reason to doubt a litter's sire and I understand it may be used forensically on mixed breeds, as in dog attack cases. But I'm wondering if the average mixed breed owner would care to spend the money just to satisfy their curiosity of Fido's heritage. Many times, it's pretty obvious anyway, and for most of us, it really doesn't matter. We just eyeball the dog and form an opinion.
I would be interested where these tests are done though, when you find out.

» lhartranft - Any idea what breed?
We recently adopted a puppy. She is about 4-5 months old and weights about 23-25lbs. She's roughly 18" tall to her shoulders and has a short coat, black with white down her face, neck, chest, and tummy plus white tips on her paws and tail. She has bright, brown eyes, a long tail. Her temperment is very sweet and quite calm and she learns very quickly. They said at the rescue if they had to guess they'd say Lab/Border Collie but maybe some Pointer? I don't know how to post a picture but I have pictures through Kodak Easyshare, I can email if needed. Thanks!-- posted by lhartranft

I can't picture this for some reason even though your description is great! Yes send me a photo at dogs@suite101.com and I'll see if I can concur on what the breeds are in your puppy. Whatever she is, she sounds adorable!

We don't think she has much beagle in her, and she does have webbed feet, like a lab. We think she's mostly some type of lab mix, but would like to know more. The vet's office didn't tell us much.
We certainly love her, but the whole potty/crate training thing seems overwhelming. We don't want to keep her in the crate during the day unless we have to (mostly because she pees in there while we are gone), and because she needs the interaction with us to develop a loving bond. But, I have to admit, it gets frustrating at times to not get much work done around here with having to keep a constant eye on her. I hope you guys can tell me anything that would help. Thanks!
