» tonyrobin - Must we have fireworks

Having had dogs for more than 30 years I still dread this time of the year when fireworks are being let off. WHY in Gods name must people let off fireworks. In my opinion it is just a complete waste of money, which could be spent more wisely on other things that would benefit mankind. For the majority of animals they hate it. With their sense of hearing and feeling they are able to pick up the sounds from far far away, when WE cant hear or feel anything. They become so stressed that for a long time afterwards they associate darkness with fireworks, even a car door slamming shut, or a hammer and nails, these normal things for us, bring terror to our poor animals. Why must we have fireworks? In the UK they celebrate Guy Faulks on Nov 5th, but the celebration starts weeks and weeks before, why?, because the laws are so stupid that anybody can but fireworks at anytime of the year, and anyone can set off fireworks on their own property whenever they want too, up until 2300. This does not stop them from setting off fireworks all night long.
The "colourful exhibitions of fireworks" should be completely banned, the explosions are nothing short of real bombs. Some explosions exceed 140db, and house windows vibrate, almost like the blitz in London again, If they think it fun, then send them out to Iraq and let them play with their toys over there. Of course it will never ever stop, just as long as the governments of the world are so stupid and possibly in the pockets of big industries that are responsible for all of this crazy thing. I say, ban fireworks for ever. It doesnt prove anything at all, only that the people who are responsible are thoughtless and callous.

Though we can not do anything about fireworks, as it has been a tradition in many countries for hundreds of years, we can anticipate the times of year when they will be shot off and take steps to minimize the stress on our pets.

I bring mine inside and make sure I comfort them periodically to ensure they are as relaxed as possible. If you can't do that, maybe try to sound proof their kennels in anticipation of the noise temporarily with old blankets so they feel they have a safe place.
