» donnafield328 - How to integrate a "found" min pin in family of 2 boxer kids

On 12/16/06; I was returning home from local store and found what appeared to be a lost puppy. It was 9pm, cold and very windy. After some coaxing, the little one came to me. I knocked on doors near the area but no one claimed nor new of him.
He instantly affixed himself to my 5 year old overweight boxer girl, Zeena. And I Do mean "affixed" himself for almost 24 hrs straight. However, by the afternoon of the following day, Zeena had managed to doggie door train him and also calm him down abit. So, by the time Animal Control showed up, I couldn't send him away. In addition to reporting him as Lost with Animal Control, I placed his listing on many sites and agencies. I put signs thru out the neighborhood and stores. No such luck. I had my Vet check for microchip, no luck. As days past, his "fixating" habit has waned and Zeena began to act as his surrogate mom. However, my other male boxer, Peete, also a rescue and also deaf, simply ignored this new member. In Peete's defense, I recently learned that he was suffering from a very low thyroid and allergies and with treatment he is becoming alive once more. He even attempts to play with JJ (new member, min pin Jumping Jack)and vice versa. But,as Peete is becoming more active, and resuming his past habits, sleeping in bed with me (currently I have to help him onto bed) and gently getting my attention with his paw when he needs something, that is when JJ started to growl and surround me and even has lunged and attacked Peete drawing blood. I recently started to talk to Peete with soothing voice as I do with Zeena and JJ. I have explained to JJ that Peete is good and loving and poses no threat. Now I do not know if he is jealous or continuing to protect me. It is not constant, and at other times JJ sleeps next to me and Peete, plays with Peete, and even attempts to make peace by licking his eyes or ears, sometimes while low grumbling. To top it all off, I am on Disability income only. I was hit by a drunk driver in 4/00 and Zeena was my source of spiritual and loving strength. I sincerely want to be able to continue having JJ a part of our family as he has now adopted us. Also, he is not fixed, due to my lack of income, going from $80-100K yrly to $1087 mthly, in addition I was forced to sell my home in 2003 and have been living in a very stressful house and relationship. Any tips, for helping me teach JJ that some of Peetes actions are NOT threatening and also how to get the fearless wonder not to jump constantly all over me with his razor claws? Any help with lost cost neutering or even if I should consider it? I currently live in Phoenix, AZ, hoping to move anywhere where there are seasons, grass and plants, but for now, Phoenix. I truly need to be assured that he will receive great care despite my lack of funds. I know, very lengthy saga, I've become a bit isolated, and no, I'm not totally unhinged. Alittle, but then, thats always been a part of me that I love. The reason for bits and pieces written above, is I believe if we reach out, there are like persons who may have the perfect advice or referrals. Thanks for anyone who has lasted to this point, and I thank you in advance for any input! Thanks, Donna

In response to How to integrate a "found" min pin in family of 2 boxer kids posted by donnafield328:

It's funny, I just wrote an article on Min Pins and then you posted this. http://dog-breeds.suite101.com/article.c...

We have quite a few of the little "fearless wonders" come through our shelter. Most of them are just as you described JJ, cocky and protective. I recently fell in love with one at our shelter and brought her home for 3 days to see if she would blend in with my household but she didn't work out. Just two days after I took her back, she got adopted by a retired couple and is the only pet in their household. It's a perfect home for her and I know she'll be happier there. http://dogs.suite101.com/blogs.cfm#the_m...

Anyway I said all that to say this...they are great little dogs and I can understand how you fell in love with JJ but, unfortunately, I have little advice on how to integrate him into your family. I did do a search for a Min Pin rescue in Phoenix and found Min Pin Haven at http://www.minpinhaven.com/

Number 2 on their Missions page says they help people to "positively change unwanted behavior." Since they have extensive experience with the Min Pin breed, hopefully they can give you some good advice. They may also be able to help you find low cost neutering and vet care in your area. I wish you the best with your doggy situation. I'm glad Peete is feeling better. Please keep us posted.
