» calvin5 - high creatinine level - Golden Retriever

I read a very similar post regarding a greyhound. I took my 5 year old male Golden Retriever to have his teeth cleaned & the blood test revealed a creatinine level of 3.1.
The vet did a urinalysis, which didn't show high protein, which according to his opinion was great news, as it pretty much ruled out kidney failure - He said he was 90% certain. At that point he said it hopefully was a bladder infection causing the high creatinine. Unfortunately a more detailed urinalysis ruled out bladder infection. I'm now waiting for the results on another urinalysis & more information from the vet.
My dog shows no symptoms of chronic renal failure - vomiting, excessive drinking, dehydration, but 3.1 is a relatively high creatinine level. Needless to say I'm very concerned, & any info or similar experiences based on the specifics I have given will be greatly appreciated.

Creatinine is a product of muscle metabolism which is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys. Of course if the kidneys aren't working right, it doesn't all get filtered out and the blood level will go up. In most dogs, the normal values are considered to be something like .5 to 1.5 if I remember right. Still, other things like muscle problems, heart problems, dehydration, some drugs, and a few other things can cause an elevated creatinine. A single test result really doesn't tell the vet a whole lot. Diagnosing is sort of like putting together a puzzle. The more pieces you have, the easier to see the picture. The doctor will begin testing for the most likely problem and if it's not that, then progress to the next, such as infection. You didn't mention a BUN or other chemistries but I'm thinking those would have been part of the blood panel. Anyway, please keep us posted.

Hi, recently my 3 yr old pomeranian's blood work showed high creatine (2.7) and bun (26.3) levels with small amounts of protein in his urine. My vet diagnosed him as having moderate kidney failure. My dog is not showing any of the expected symptoms and I am wondering how you and your dog made out and what the diagnosis turned out to be. I too am very concerned and any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I'm wondering what you feed your dog. With a dog this young and all the pet food recalls in the past year, it can sure make one distrustful of any commercial food.
