» glimlet - This is Bradferd- what is he???

Bradferd is approx 8 mo old. Weighs 18 lbs.
His last owner got him from the shelter at 5months. The shelter paperwork lists him as a lab/shepherd mix.
His last owner didnt think so and we don't think so, cause he is soo tiny! Very short hair, hardly sheds, fast and graceful like a gazelle, but also loves to lie around in the sun or curled up next to me. He is very small. Small feet, but long n lean. So muscular- he reminds me of a runner or swimmer. he is very smart, learns quick! My BF thinks he has Whippet in him? And quite a few people ask if he is part ridgeback? Tho he has no ridge.......... My mom thinks some sort of hound........ no one thinks he will get much bigger tho- so definately NOT a LAB/Shepherd mix.
he has tony paws.....
Any help would be great. I realize he is a mutt of some sort, tho my brother thinks his coloring he would have darker nails if he was a mutt?
Brad is fawn colored or wheaton red? with a small white patch on his chest. Flat head, wide set ears. He has red eyelashes!
Any help would be appreciated........................
Thank you so much!!!

Thank you for visiting Suite101. Bradferd is certainly a cutie. I love those eyes. I'm pretty sure he's a mutt, which just means a mixture of breeds and doesn't have anything to do with nail color. He's definitely not Lab/Shepherd. He's also not Ridgeback since these are big dogs too, around 75/80 pounds. I can't see in the pictures the structure of his body or whether or not he has a tail but he could possibly have a little Whippet in him. He could also have a little red Min Pin (though they're smaller) and even a little Dachshund. But mostly I see terrier, probably rat terrier mixed with several of those other breeds. To keep things simple, I would probably just tell folks he's a terrier mix. They're great little dogs. I have three terrier mixes, all with different personalities. Weighing 18 pounds at 8 months, he probably won't get much, if any, bigger. I'm sending links to all the breeds I mentioned so that you can see what you think. » melaniemg2000 - Any idea what this dog is?

I just took this puppy in off the streets a couple days ago, so don't know anything about him. I think he is about 3-6 months old. He is the most affectionate animal I have ever known. He almost never barks, and is very mellow. The markings are the most curious to me. His pink tongue has one black spot on it way in the back. If anyone can help me identify what type of mix this dog is I would really appreciate it. I am almost obsessed with figuring it out! We go to the vet next weekend, but I hope to get some answers before then. Thanks everyone. I do have lots of great pictures of him, but not sure how to post them here.

Melanie

You're very kind to take in this homeless puppy and it sounds like you've already gotten attached to him. I don't think there's any way to post pictures here but if you put them on a website or somewhere like photobucket, you can post the link here.

Does he still have his baby teeth? If he does, they will be tiny and needle-like. The permanent teeth are bigger and more rounded. They lose the canines at about 4 months. You should be able to tell by this if he's younger or older than 4 months. It's good that he's going to see the vet soon since most stray puppies like this have some type of worms and also do not have a very strong immune system. Without immunizations and preventatives for heartworm and fleas, he is vulnerable to diseases. The vet will also be able to help you identify what mix he may be. I'm posting links to my free online course and some articles you may find interesting.

In response to Any idea what this dog is? posted by JButler:
There is a new genetic test out to determine what breed a dog is - it's called Wisdom Panel MX - check at www.WISDOMPANEL.com or 1-888-K9PETTEST. As a veterinarian, I often am asked what breed the "mutt" that has been adopted is - sometimes it's pretty obvious, others, nearly impossible. As I understand it, this test should be reasonably priced and can help determine what's in those little guys that we just don't have any idea about! (Note - this is brand new on the market, and I have NOT used it yet....)
Edit - happened on this discussion from a web search - after going to the front page of the dog section, I see that there was a post about a couple of the genetic tests on July 7.
Best of luck!

Yes, these tests are just "hot off the press" and it seems everyone is curious as to what breeds their mutt is. When the Wisdom Panel MX becomes available in veterinary offices, I would be interested to know how popular it is. For those interested in reading about the genetics tests, here's the link to the article.
