» tammy84 - my puppies weight and size

hopefully someone out there can help me out...my son was born february 23, 2007..he came home 18 lbs at 6 wks....he then promptly gained 11 lbs every 3 wks and then slowed down..now I have read that slow growth is better and that sounds smart. His mother was aprox 180 at 4 yrs (gerpedi)I know that is not spelled right sorry and his father weighed 202 at 2 yrs (semper-fi) he is going on 7 mos and weighs 90-100 lbs...well sorry he wouldn't hold still and was wagging the whole hind quarters when we tried to weigh him. ha-ha. The problem is we have been told they aquire bone growth the first two years and muscle the next two years. He is very tall and very thin...And as I have read his hind quarters and front quarters are always teeter tottering...We are feeding Hill's Science Diet for Large breed..6 cups a day(3 morning and 3 night). Well spoiled rotted by the whole family. My husband is very concerned because you can see his ribs and hip bones. The vet keeps saying don't worry...Should we?

lol While I was reading your first post I kept wondering what kind of dog he is.

I'm not all that familiar with the English Mastiff breed but I do know large breeds are prone to joint problems if they grow too rapidly so it sounds like you're doing all the right things...feeding a quality brand of large breed puppy food twice a day. I would think he will appear thin to a certain degree until he starts to fill out more with muscle which, as you said, will come later on. And you probably don't want too much weight to stress his skeletal structure right now anyway. But if you're really concerned you could always go to another vet just for a second opinion.

i also had an english mastiff for 12 years and he was quite skinny and tall. i think it is normal but if you notice his hind legs having trouble you might want to get it looked at. some of mastiffs have hip problems. dont worry it doesnt sound serious especially if your doctor didnt think there was anything wrong.just wanted to let you know. some of them have a big head with lots of wrinkles and loose skin and mine didnt have as much and was lean. im pretty sure its normal. all dogs are different.but congrats on getting one..they are wonderfull dogs,i had mine from when i was 6 months till 12 years. i can only say good things about them. Also, we gave mine gelatin powder in his wet food for his bones as he got older,it might help. ill see if i can find any pictures from when he was small.i hope this helped!
