» Feature Writer Joy Butler - What breed is my dog?

In response to What breed is my dog? posted by terri1976:

It would be impossible to give much of a guess with just a description but if you post pictures of Cookie somewhere like photobucket and then post a link here we can all see how she looks. BTW, I have seen mixed breeds used in advertising probably about as often as purebreds. And I know you didn't ask but just a friendly comment; my experience and that of many people I've talked to is that flea collars don't work very well. I would suggest using one of the topicals from a veterinarian's office. They may seem more expensive but, in the long run, they're not because they work.

» dadoteen - Can you help me identify my dog's breed?

Hi,
We brought home a small dog last week who is as cute as a button, but not sure what breeds are in her. She is - we believe - full grown and guessing about a year old. She has short reddish, brownish hair (resulting in the name of Ginger!)and small floppy triangular shaped ears. When her ears are perked up they still flop, but when she jumps they almost look like a chihuahua's ears! She is super playful and loves to please. Works hard for treats. If you speak sharply to her, she gets very quiet (almost sulky). She bounces around sometimes looking like a rabbit in movement. Hmm...that's all I can think of for descriptions. Will try to post pics as well.

You're right, she's cute as a button! She also looks like quite a mix to me. I'm not able to distinguish any particular breed in her. At a shelter she would probably be called simply a terrier mix. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks for looking and giving me your opinion. What kind of terrier do you think...when I look at pictures online of dog breeds I can't seem to match her up with any terriers, although you are not the first to tell me that.

It doensn't really matter what she is...we love her to death anyway...she's just Ginger...she is such a character it wouldn't have been fun to figure out what her "heritage" is!

I can't actually match her up with any particular terrier breed either but I believe she may be predominantly a mixture of any number of terriers. She probably also has other diluted bloodlines in heras well. I think Ginger is a true Heinz 57. happy Personally I think they tend to make the best pets. It's for dogs like these that I wish the DNA tests weren't quite so expensive. Have you seen my articles?

Hey Joy, just checkin back in w/ya since my little Heinz 57 pup is now 7 months old. Here's a link to some recent photos of her that might either verify what we already think she was..or just add more breeds to her mix lol. Thanks again for your input!

Well I have to say that at 7 months, she's starting to look a little more Rottweiler-y. However, she's a little leggy and more slender plus the fact that her nose is quite long. Guess maybe that could be from either Black and Tan Coonhound or Doberman or both. happy What does she weigh now?
