My research shows that some brands have variable length teeth vs. comb attachments. Which is better? or not? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

I'd look for Oster. maybe a used oster clipper would be affordable, but make sure you buy new blades - old blades can be dangerous if not resharpened and cared for properly. I would ask your local groomers how to find some used devices - i bet they will sell you their old ones. :-)

Thank you for your suggestion. After plenty of research, I have decided to buy the Oster A5 clippers with an extra blade. They will pay for themselves quickly, as I reckon on at least another dozen years of grooming for our little girl! I take your point too about keeping them sharpened etc.

Hello, I have a shih tzu and wanted to start doing his hair at home. I am confused about the different types of blades to buy and they are so expensive to experiment with. I like his hair pretty short but his tail long...also dto do the face you use shears and the body use clippers and the legs and tail you use what? What blade size do you suggest? Thanks so much any other suggestions would be great! Joyce

I don't know much about clipping dogs but as Jill suggested above, your local groomer may be a source of used tools as well as information.
